Haggin Oaks’ Mike Woods Qualifies For The 2023 National PGA Professional Championship

Congratulations to Haggin Oaks Director of Golf & PGA Golf Professional Mike Woods who fired a 72-68 – 140 at Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California this past week to finish second in the 2022 Northern California Professional Championship behind winner Scott de Borba (68-68 – 136). With his second place finish, Mike, along with de Borba, Tom Johnson, Rodney Wilson, Brad Marek and Warren Pineo, have qualified to participate in the 2023 National PGA Professional Championship in April 2023 at Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico. That event will be televised live on the Golf Channel where Club Professionals from all 50 states will be competing to not only identify the best-playing Club Pro, but who will represent the PGA of America in the PGA Championship being held in May at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.


Born and raised in Marin County, sports has always been big part of his life. At an early age, his first love was soccer. Most weekends were spent traveling to soccer tournaments on the West Coast. He feels he learned the importance of teamwork and leadership from being a competitive soccer player.


At Terra Linda High School, Mike played four years of soccer and golf. His team was the league soccer champions all four years, and he participated in the Nor Cal Championships for two years and was first-team All-Northern-California as a senior.


When Mike wasn’t playing soccer, he was playing golf with his father. They enjoyed playing golf together whenever they could and Mike feels it was golf that taught him the importance of character and quality virtues.


In 1987, Mike chose to attend college at California State University of Sacramento. Playing soccer in the fall and golf in the spring was as good as it could get for Mike. However, Mike decided only to play golf during his Junior and Senior years because it because a year-round sport and the team played on some of the best courses on the West Coast. He graduated in 1992 with a BS in Business.


In 1990, Mike started working part-time at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex as a starter and when graduating from CSUS, he decided to try the golf business as his career. In 1992, he was promoted as an Assistant Golf Professional and started the PGA Apprentice Program. While learning to be an expert clubfitter, golf instructor and salesperson, he received his PGA Class A Membership in 1996. Next, Mike was named as only the third Head Golf Professional in the history of Haggin Oaks, and today is the Director of Golf.


In 2013, Mike introduced FootGolf to Haggin Oaks and Bing Maloney Golf Courses, the first courses in Northern California to offer the new sport. Mike has become an expert in golf course operations, including tournament operations, pro shop operations, range operations, retailing, club repair, club fitting, golf instruction, Some of Mike’s career highlights include:

Mike is married to his lovely wife, Leslie, and has a son, Sean, and daughter, Leah.
