Arcade Creek’s Doublecross: A Must-Play Golf Hole for Any Enthusiast

Golf enthusiasts from all around California travel to Sacramento to enjoy the beautiful game on one of the best golf courses in the region, the Arcade Creek Golf Course at Haggin Oaks. Designed by renowned architect Mac McDonagh, the course features a unique layout that challenges golfers of all skill levels.  And it is on that Arcade Creek Golf Course at Haggin Oaks where McDonagh created one of the most memorable holes in Sacramento and beyond, a par 5 hole #18 affectionately (or diabolically) known as The Doublecross. Golf enthusiasts can agree that Arcade Creek’s Doublecross is a must-play hole.

The course is part of the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, which also includes the Alister MacKenzie course, a night-lighted driving range, and a 15,000-square-foot Golf Super Shop. The Arcade Creek Golf Course is a par-72 course that spans over 6,991 yards. It features four sets of tees, which allow golfers to choose the level of difficulty that suits their skill level.

Beware of the Arcade Creek’s Doublecross

Arcade Creek runs through the course and creates water hazards on the final two holes of each nine. Golfers need to navigate these hazards to score well, which adds an extra layer of excitement and challenge to the game.  But it’s The Doublecross that not only places the Arcade Creek across the fairway once, but twice!

The hole’s design resembles the letter “C”. The back two tee markers require a strategically placed shot across the creek to a landing spot. There’s more creek left and out-of-bounds right. Once that shot has been navigated, typically a layup shot ahead of the next creek crossing is needed. A centuries-old oak tree is usually the target for that second shot, giving the golfer an approach shot to a perfectly framed third shot back across the creek from roughly 135 yards. Twice across the creek… thus the double-crossing.

For those big hitters that think they can reach the Par 5 in two, the second shot requires a completely blind second shot over and around some eucalyptus trees to a large sloping green. It’s a great risk/reward opportunity that will penalize as much as it will grant low scores.

The course also features well-manicured fairways and greens, which provide a perfect playing surface for golfers. McDonagh strategically placed the bunkers around the greens, which adds a layer of difficulty to approach shots.

The Arcade Creek Golf Course is not just a great place to golf, but it also has a rich history. The course was opened in 1957 and has undergone several renovations over the years to keep it in pristine condition. It has hosted several prestigious events, including the California State Fair Amateur Championship and the Sacramento City Championship over the years.

The pro shop offers a wide variety of golf equipment and apparel from top brands. The staff is knowledgeable and can help golfers find the right equipment for their game. The restaurant serves delicious food and drinks, which makes it a perfect place to relax after a round of golf.

In conclusion, the Arcade Creek Golf Course at Haggin Oaks is a must-play for any golfer visiting Sacramento. The course offers a unique and challenging layout that will test even the most skilled golfers. With its rich history and beautiful scenery, the course provides an unforgettable golfing experience.  Just don’t get double-crossed on The Doublecross!
