The War By The Shore
The Incomparable Drama of the 1991 Ryder Cup
Curt Sampson

This is the true story of the dramatic 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island, which forever changed this great competition. The 1991 Ryder Cup really began in 1985. Up to then, the biennial match between all star golf professionals from America and Europe was more ceremonial exhibition than real competition, with Americans dominating the Europeans. In 1985 that all changed when the Europeans wrestled the Cup away from the Americans at The Belfry in England. They continued to beat the Americans in 1987 and held on to the Cup with a draw in 1989. By the time the 1991 Ryder Cup arrived, the American team had vengeance on its mind. Join bestselling author Curt Sampson as he chronicles this pivotal competition in his always well-searched, engrossing and deeply entertaining way. The War By The Shore is the story of when golf lost its manners (and to some extent, its mind).

About the Author
Curt Sampson grew up playing many sports, including golf and attended Kent State University on a schoolarship where he won one tournament and made the All-MAC team twice.

Following graduation, he worked as a club pro for several years, briefly toured internationally and played in the mini-tours in Florida before pursuing a career in writing.

Texas Golf Legends, his first book, was a collaboration with Santa Fe-based artist Paul Milosevich. Researching TGL gained Sampson introductions with people he has written about many times since: Hogan, Nelson, Crenshaw, Trevino, and a few dozen others.  His next book—The Eternal Summer, a recreation of golf’s summer of 1960, when Hogan, Palmer, and Nicklaus battled—is still selling 15 years after its debut, a rarity in the publishing world. HBO’s 2009 documentary “Back Nine at Cherry Hills” was based on TES.

Sampson’s biography of the enigmatic William Ben Hogan struck a chord. Both Hogan and his next book, The Masters, appeared on the New York Times bestseller lists.

The War by the Shore, Sampson’s 14th book, was released September 6. A Golf Channel documentary based on it aired for the first time on September 25.
