Today in the 86th Annual California State Fair Golf Championship on the MacKenzie GC at Haggin Oaks, University of California sophomore Michael Weaver fired a blistering 63 to set a new course record on the 78 year old track.
As a freshman on the Cal Bears team, Weaver was a major force. He posted the team’s second-lowest stroke average at 72.0 … finished tied for 41st at his first NCAA Championships (75-73-69 – 217, +1) with his final round 69 the best score shot by a Cal player at the 2010 NCAA’s … put together back-to-back impressive outings in his two events preceding the NCAA’s, placing a team-high eighth at the NCAA Southwest Regional (70-74-73 – 217, +1) after tying for sixth at the Pac-10 Championship (68-71-66-69 – 274, -10) … Cal’s top finisher in each of the team’s last two events, as well as its second finisher behind Pac-10 champion Eric Mina at the conference tournament … was named the California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week (May 24) after his NCAA Southwest Regional performance … his finish at the NCAA Southwest Regional was the highest NCAA Regional finish for a Cal player since All-American and current PGA Tour professional Peter Tomasulo tied for sixth in 2004 … had four top-10 finishes, also tying for second at the Arizona Intercollegiate (64-68-71 – 203, -10) and tying for eighth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (69-68 – 137, -5) … the 64 he shot to open the Arizona Intercollegiate is a career-best and was also the lowest round by a Cal player this season … missed a pair of tournaments in the spring due to illness after his Arizona Intercollegiate showing before returning to action for each of the last six events.
