Elk Grove native Grant Rappleye shot a final round course record of 63- tying the score set the day before by Michael Weaver- to take a convincing three shot victory at the 86th Annual California State Fair Golf Championship at the Alister MacKenzie GC at Haggin Oaks.
Rappleye’s score of 200 left him only one stroke short of tying the tournament record of 199 set in 2001 by two-time champion Robert Hamilton.
Pace Johnson, a sophomore player at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, shot an 8-under-par 64 to move 14 under for the tournament after two rounds but his one-over round on Monday left him tied for second with Colfax’s Patrick Bauer. Richard Lamb of South Bend, Indiana finished at 12 under and in fourth place.
Rappleye, a junior at California State University of Sacramento, led his college conference with a scoring average of 73.48 and had three top 10 finishes in 2009-10. The Sacramento native was also one of the most consistent golfers in the America Sky as 22 of his 27 rounds were 75 or better. Rappleye shot 69-71-71-211 at the Kaua’i Collegiate Invitational to rank third in school history. His best finish was came at the Paulous Cougar Invitational and the Braveheart Classic where he was sixth.
Rappleye shared the converence Player of the Year award with Northern Colorado’s Steve Bidne and Binghamton’s Jake Katz.
