It all started with the speed pocket which accelerates the speed of the face adding distance to off center hits.

Kolarik responded that it acts almost like a hinge, accelerating the bottom portion of the club. In most traditional irons, the sole of the iron is a very rigid portion of the club. TaylorMade has freed up the bottom of the club which means finish shots will see better distance performance, and high flying stopping power.
