In what was a surprising mild early summer spell in between major heat waves, a group of local junior golfers showcased their incredible skill at the 53rd Annual Sacramento County Junior Golf Championship this week at Cherry Island GC in Elverta, CA. The tournament was open to all junior golfers age 12-18 as long as they have not started college prior to June 22.
The tournament format was 36 holes of stroke play – 18 on Tuesday and 18 on Wednesday- with separate flights for 16-18 boys, 14-15 boys, 12-13 boys, 16-18 girls, 14-15 girls and 12-13 girls.
Sacramento’s Patrick Dumag, fresh off his graduation from Inderkum HS and headed to Sac State in the fall, took home the boys overall honor and first place in the 16-18 age division with a two day total of -3 141. Dumag rode five birdies on his second round to lead by two over Fairfield sixteen-year-old Easton Hether and Granite Bay seventeen-year-old Arthur Lyons IV who with finished at -1 for the two days. Hether fired 69-74 as the first-day leader and Lyons shot 73-70 to both share second place.
In the boys 14-15 year old division, Elk Grove fourteen-year-old Casey Kosney took home first place honors with a 76-69 two day total of +1 145. His second round 3-under score tied him for low round for the day. Sacramento fifteen-year-old Mathew Miyamoto finished in second place with a consistent 73-73 two-over score of 146.
Another age group back, Fair Oaks thirteen-year-old Landon Abalateo ran away with his age group win with an incredible score of 73-69 to finish at minus two 142. This score led second place by a remarkable 13 strokes.
On the girl’s side, the play was equally strong. Roseville seventeen-year-old Jessica Burdick shot a score of 73-78 to finish at 151 to win the 16-18 age group for the event. El Dorado Hills eighteen-year-old Ellie Sand fired 78-78 for a 156 to finish alone in second place.
But it was fourteen-year-old and Fairfield-native Sophia Lee that ran away with the overall girls title (and first place in her division). Lee fired a remarkable 72-74 two day total of +2 146 to finish 13 strokes ahead of second place finisher and fellow fourteen-year-old Sabina Han of Folsom.
Last but certainly not least, twelve-year-old El Dorado Hills-native Bella Ransi took home honors in the Girls 12-13 age group with a score of 82-76 158. She finished five strokes ahead of second place finisher, thirteen-year-old and fellow El Dorado Hills resident, Emily Guan.
Congratulations to all the young adults for two excellent days of golf. The next big local event is the Peggy Dodds Sacramento City Golf Championship being held July 6 and 7 on Haggin Oaks GC.
