A buried lie is one of the most difficult shots in golf, but you can recover from it easier than you think.
We all end up in the bunker from time to time. Sometimes it’s a simple chip onto the green, but sometimes you find that dreaded buried lie, when your ball is embedded in the sand. Many golfers overthink how to get out of a buried lie and it costs them a couple extra swings; but it’s actually a lot easier than you think. Let’s go over how to hit your ball out of a buried lie.
Unlike a normal bunker shot, we want to keep the club face straight. This will cause the club to dig down into the sand and push the ball out.
Next, you need to swing about twice as big as you normally would in a bunker. There is more mass and friction than it seems in the sand; you need the extra momentum to get the ball out of the sand.
The last thing to keep in mind is that since your club face is straight, you will not be able to spin the ball with this shot. Your ball isn’t going to go up high and plop right down, it’s going to roll straight from where it lands. Make sure to aim for the edge of the green to have your ball roll toward the pin.
