FARMINGTON, Utah — For the sixth time in the last eight years, Sacramento State head coach David Sutherland has been named the Jeff Smith Big Sky Women’s Golf Coach of the Year, it was announced today. The award is named in honor of former Weber State head coach Jeff Smith.
Sutherland was a unanimous selection to win this year’s honor after guiding the Hornets to four victories during the season, including the Big Sky Championship. Sacramento State finished the tournament at 2-under par and won the event by a convincing 14 strokes. The team’s four tournament titles are tied for the second most in school single-season history, trailing only the five won last season. The Hornets’ current team scoring average of 290.67 strokes per round is the best in school history.
“This award is always a reflection of the great play by the members of our team,” Sutherland said. “The award should also be shared by (assistant coach) Cindy (Mah-Lyford) whose work is invaluable and a big reason for our success. I would also be remiss not to remember Jeff Smith who was a fantastic coach and even better person.”
Sacramento State will continue its season on May 6-8 at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional held at Tumble Creek GC in Washington.
Sutherland was previously named Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
