Despite unseasonably cold weather, the region’s very best golfers were on fire at the Bing Maloney Golf Course here in Sacramento on April 12 and 13, 2022. The longtime premier JGANC and Sacramento Golf Council event welcomed juniors from all over Northern California, where each player teed off for a chance at the overall champion title.

The tournament was open to juniors ages 7 to 18. Juniors 7 to 11 played nine holes medal play each day on the Bing Maloney Express Nine golf course, and juniors 12 to 18 played 18 holes medal play each day on the Bing Maloney 18-hole golf course. After two full days of competition, two players came out on top.

Tavia Burgess from Mather, CA parlayed nine, yes nine, birdies over two rounds of golf into an overall score of minus four 142 to take the win over second-place finisher Nikki Chindavong of Fairfield CA who finished at minus two. Chindavong herself had eight birdies over the course of her two rounds and both played brilliantly.

On the boy’s side, Elk Grove’s Oscar Gutierrez even scored more under par holes. He had a ridiculous twelve birdies over his two rounds of golf to finish one stroke ahead of second-place finisher Landon Ababateo of Fair Oaks. Guitierrez finished at minus four 140 for the two rounds and Abalateo at 141. Rocklin’s Luke Price finished at minus two and Matthew Shimizu of Roseville at even-par 144.

Built-in 1952 on a 125-acre site, Bing Maloney was named in memory of John B. “Bing” Maloney, former superintendent of the City of Sacramento’s Recreation Department. Maloney was instrumental in persuading the city to build the course. Bing Maloney was designed by a veteran city employee, Michael J. McDonaugh. McDonaugh had been an associate of Alister MacKenzie, the renowned golf designer of the first part of the 20th century. In fact, McDonaugh worked on the construction crew that had built Cypress Point and Pasatiempo Golf Courses and the Alister MacKenzie Course at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento.
