Turf Management Industry and Job Opportunities Workshop at William Land Golf Course in Sacramento, CA.
American River College brought their Horticulture class of fifteen students to Land Park on Thursday April 20th. While there they attended a workshop focused on the Turf Management Industry and Job Opportunities at William Land Golf Course (WLGC). This field trip was a part of our WLGC Community Outreach Program. It was aimed at fulfilling the Audubon International certification requirement for Land Park.
A few experts from industry were invited to help share their knowledge and expertise about the Turfgrass Management.
Below are a few topical highlights from the speakers at the event:
Muhammad Ali, William Land Golf Superintendent hosted the event. Jim Ferrin, President of CAG (California’s Alliance for Golf), kicked of the event as an educational resource for the industry. His work focuses on the economic benefits and environmental stewardship provided by the game of golf. He was able to educated students about the Environmental Benefits of Golf Courses.
Dean Kinney is an agronomist from Sierra Pacific, a third-generation, family-owned forest products company based in Anderson, California. Kinney shared current trends about Fertilizers and Chemicals Use and Job Opportunities in 2023.
Tim McCoy represented Toro/Turfstar, which carries major lines of turf maintenance equipment, construction equipment and vehicles, including Club Car, Ventrac, Harper, Salsco and Foley Grinders. Tim gave an equipment demo and shared job opportunities.
Chris Mitchell, Russ Mitchell, and Associates – Educated the ARC students about Golf Irrigation Design and the process of designing and installing a water management system that ensures the proper irrigation of a golf course. In addition, they communicated numerous job opportunities available to students in the industry.
Steve Abela a representative of Delta Blue Grass Sod, a full-line Sod Company, one of the few in the industry discussed different aspects of Sod Farming along with Job Opportunities.
Kelly Kerr, Rainbird irrigation/ Sierra Pacific, gave expert examples of smarter watering and greener grass. Kelly also discussed the concept of intelligent watering which included Water Conservation and Consumption and Industry Innovation.
