William Land Golf Course Celebrates its 100th Anniversary with a Centennial Celebration

City councilmembers, media representatives, and Sacramento golfers gathered together for a day of golf at William Land Golf Course.

William Land Golf Course celebrated its birthday with a weekend of golf! William Land Golf Course opened on May 25th, 1924 after a generous bequeathment of $450,000 to the City of Sacramento from the late William Land. The course celebrated with a double shotgun golf tournament on Saturday and Customer Appreciation Day on Sunday.

City officials, media representatives, and Sacramento golfers gathered on Saturday at William Land Golf Course to take part in a special golf event. Players were treated to breakfast and a welcome ceremony and then played 9 holes. Among those playing were city and county officials taking part in this year’s Capitol Golf Challenge, an annual golf tournament that pits city and county workers in friendly competition.

Once all the golfers had finished their rounds, it was time for lunch! Burgers and more were served by the staff from Mulligan’s Grille. During lunch, several speaks took the microphone to talk about the importance of William Land Golf Course to Sacramento. These included county supervisor Patrick Kennedy, city councilmember Rick Jennings, former councilmember Rob Fong, and PGA Hall of Fame member Ken Morton Sr. Following these speeches, Rob Fong announced the winners of the Capitol Golf Challenge—the City team!

After the winners were announced, cake was served to everyone in attendance. The final part of the luncheon was a presentation unveiling future plans for William Land Golf Course, drafted by course architect Brett Hochstein. His plan outlines a decade-long revitalization that will address irrigation issues, green maintenance, and more. This effort will bring the course up to USGA standards and prepare the course to spend another 100 years as the Cradle of golf in Sacramento.
